Meyer Burger supplies BIPV solar facade to the SWISS KRONO building

Meyer Burger supplied SWISS KRONO with photovoltaic modules of the latest generation for the active building shell of the new office building and meets maximum requirements regarding energy efficiency and esthetics. The high-performance modules combine the market and industry leading cell coating technology MB PERC with the innovative SmartWire Connection Technology and were developed and produced at the Meyer Burger technology and product center in Thun (Switzerland).

Meyer Burger Technology Ltd (SIX Swiss Exchange: MBTN) supplied SWISS KRONO, a major player in the manufacturing and finishing of wood-based products based in Menznau (Switzerland), with innovative and high-performance glass-glass solar modules. The high-performance coating technology PERC (Passivated Emitter Rear Cell) increases the efficiency of the solar cells in comparison to conventional cells significantly. The market and industry leading MB PERC cells were further connected in the module by the innovative Meyer Burger SmartWire Connection Technology (SWCT). The SmartWire Connection Technology connects the individual cells through a foil-wire electrode instead of the conventional two to five busbars. Thanks to the dense contact matrix the performance of the modules increases again considerably. Another advantage of the SmartWire Connection Technology is the delicate and uniform appearance of the module as part of the building shell.

In total, 406 solar modules in 23 different shapes were integrated into all four sides of the building. The solar facade amounts to a remarkable performance of 103 kWp. The entire power output of the powerful photovoltaic facade is used directly on-site.

The high-performance modules are encapsulated by glass on both sides. Thanks to the glass-glass structure the solar modules are transparent and the typical SWISS KRONO red of the SWISSCDF board underneath gleams through and has a special esthetic effect. The attractive combination of colorful boards and transparent modules makes a creative design with photovoltaic modules without loss of performance possible.

The new SWISS KRONO building with high-performance Meyer Burger modules, which meets supreme esthetic requirements, is a first-class showpiece, which proves that nowadays solar modules are a design element and an obvious part of the building shell of an energy efficient building.
